In colonial times, there were no Doctors in the beginning, only home remedies. Most of these came from Herbs, roots and barks that were either grown or gathered from nearby sources. Many remedies had been passed down for years, and had originated in Europe.

Healing was a practise that was handed down to women, and 40% of all women settlers were the healers or doctors of the community. All midwives were considered Doctors.
The settlers also picked up more in the new country from the Indians who also used herbal remedies.

I have listed the following herbs & roots , and if you click on them you will see multiple uses for each for the most part. This is not an all inclusive list, there are many others that I will eventually list as well, but it is a beginning. I do not advocate using these for any real illness, this is meant only as a reference to history and the uses they had in the colonial times.

In reality, the common person brought along from
Europe a history of self care.
Many home remedies used then and are still used today.
